Mommies take care of everything, from their husband, their children, to the their home, and for some, even work, that they often neglect to take care of themselves, but being a mommy is NOT an excuse to not look your best.  Yes, being a mommy is tiring but being a mommy also sets an example to your children about self-love, therefore, making your husband and your children love you even more.  Here are some budget-friendly tips I have for you to look and feel the best mommy in the world.


1. Cut and/or color your hair.

This is the easiest way to change your look.  I feel fresh whenever I cut or color my hair.  Go shorter to change your aura.  You'll definitely feel younger.  It does not mean you have to go to the salon to do it.  Be brave and try something new.  Cut your own hair.  There are tons of YouTube videos on how to do it properly.  As I say, "It's just hair.  It will grow back if it messes up plus I can always visit a salon if everything turns out to be a disaster."  As for hair color, there are many do-it-yourself options at your local drug store, i.e. Mercury or Watson's, your go-to supermarket, or even Lazada.  Choose a color that matches your skin tone or go bold and try a funky color.  My pasok-sa-banga recommendation, Pixxel Hair Color Cream for only 130php.  My favorites, Lolane Pixxel P17, Very Light Ash Blond for the summer and Pixxel P12 Light Chocolate for the rainy days.  I tend to go lighter on the summer months, and for the rainy season, I go darker.  One box includes a developer and hair color.  You might want to invest in a hair coloring brush to apply it.

You always, always look presentable when you have lipstick on.  Whether it's nude or your favorite perfect shade of red, you always look like you have made an effort to fix yourself up.  One observation I have made, when you have lipstick, people see you as respectable, mayaman, ganern!  One thing I learned especially when entering boutiques or going to the department store, a salesperson will always call you "ma'am/madam" when you have lipstick on versus "ate/tita" with no lipstick, just a funny observation.  My favorite nude shade as of the moment is L'Oréal Color Riche Matte shade #288, Mont Blanc.  The perfect nude for my skin tone.  It looks like my natural lip color, only better.  To make it look fancier, I dab a little Vaseline at the center of my lips.  For the perfect red, I mix two or three shades, depending on my mood;  L'Oréal Color Riche matte shade 216, Blaze of Red;  L'Oréal Star Collectionshade #CSR5, Pure Ruby; and/or Maybelline New Noveau shade #695, Divine Wine, for the perfect maldita ako/mapera ako look.  I especially love wearing red lipstick because I have full lips and I feel like a boss lady when I'm wearing it.  I got the L'Oréal and Maybelline lippies for 250php each.  My tipid tip, watch out for lipstick sales!

3.  Because kilay is life.

The mantra of most girls these days, 'KILAY IS LIFE"  As they say, "Guluhin mo nang lahat, wag lang ang nagkikilay!" To look well groomed and fit to be seen, your eyebrows have to be on point.     "Hindi ka mukhang naghihikahos pag ang kilay mo ay maayos, and I thank you!"  You can either shave, tweeze, or thread your brows to remove stray hairs.  My thin-haired girls can use castor oil applied and massaged to the brows which can be bought at the pharmacy to make your eyebrows fuller.  For swak-na-swak-sa-budget eyebrow liner, I suggest the IN2IT Tri-Angular Eyebrow Liner.  Although a little steep for 350php, it comes with a free refill plus it is retractable.  You do not have to sharpen it which is a hassle for moms like us.  My favorite shade is WTB03, Smoky Brown.  You can also try the Ever Bilena for a cheaper option.  Less than 100php for one eyebrow pencil.  Set your eyebrows with a clear gel (Tipid tip:  Borrow your husband's gel and apply it with a spooly) or use a tinted brow mascara to match your hair color.

4.  Pamper your skin.

Glowing skin is far from looking losyang.  To achieve flawless-looking skin or kutis mayaman on a budget,  you need to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  Drink lots of water and of course, get enough sleep.  Your skin will thank you later.  Next, I suggest drinking Myra E daily 400 IU.  Scrub your skin once or twice a week.  For cheap but effective homemade scrub, I use one tablet of Myra E, pricked with a needle, plus two tablespoons of sugar, two tablespoons of ground coffee (I super love this!), and two to three tablespoons of oil (coconut oil or olive oil but baby oil is just fine).  Just mix it to a thick paste and massage on dry skin in a circular motion before you shower.  Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes then rinse off with lukewarm water and I promise you, your skin will be glowing and smelling good plus coffee smooths away cellulite!  Also, always apply lotion/moisturize before going to bed.  My tipid tip, use baby's lotion.  It will work just as fine. Dry skin?  Add coconut oil or olive oil to your favorite lotion and thank me later.  My favorite moisturizers, Nivea Baby Lotion, Nivea Creme, A Bonne Milk Power Lightening Lotion with Collagen, and Nature Republic Aloe Vera 92% (Please get the original one!).

5.  Exercise.

Doing chores can be really, really tiring and will make you look losyang.  To lessen the stress of thinking what you will be doing for the entire day, I suggest, first thing in the morning, while the kids are still asleep, try exercising for 15 to 30 minutes.  I call it my "me" time when I can clear my head and focus.  It also gives me a sense of accomplishment finishing something good for the day.  A bonus is that you'll get that after-exercise glow effect.  You can try Jillian Michaels' workouts if you're a hardcore, old-school type of gal and want to lose weight or you can try one of Boho Beautiful's videos on YouTube for a quick Pilates or yoga sesh with easy stretching exercises and meditation.  I tell you, you should definitely check her out.  This girl is G-O-A-L-S!

6.  Take a shower/bath and wear your favorite perfume.

You just don't have to look neat in order to be neat, you also have to smell neat, smell beautiful in order to feel beautiful.  Personal hygiene is a must even for busy mommies like us.  During the day, we may smell of puke, poop, and pee, but at the end of the day, when the hubby arrives from work, even if we are tired, we must always be our best and smell our best.  My ritual, I used cologne for everyday wear when I'm at home or running errands and perfume when going to church or on date nights.  You can try Johnson's, Bench, or any other brand of cologne, just make sure it's not the same as your baby's, and a stronger one when going out.  My personal favorite, Baby Bench Colonia in Jelly Bean and Salvatore Ferragamo Incanto Shine Eau de Toilette for special occasions.

7.  Make an effort to get dressed.

Whether you're just going to the palengke or grocery store or even the pharmacy, you will never know who you will bump into.  This has happened to me so many times.  Always wearing my comfortable shorts or leggings and a baggy shirt even at the mall, when out of the blue I will see my former classmate or boss, and what do I do? I always end up having to hide and not say "hi" to them because I'm not dressed properly to be seen.  You always want to look well dressed even just running errands.  As I said above, even salespeople give much more attention and respect when you dress well. A tip, ask yourself when putting on clothes before going out of your house, "Do I want <insert name of an important person here> to see me like this?" If it's no, go change into something decent to be worn outside.

8.  Give yourself a "me time."

Whether it's giving yourself a DIY or salon mani/pedi, deep conditioning your hair, a massage, watching a chick flick, reading your favorite book, or doing crafts or things that you love, it's always a nice idea to pause and unwind.  Mommyhood could be very stressful that we sometimes need a break.  My ideal, once a week.  Ask your husband for a "day off" where you can do what you want, remember even "indays" or house helpers need a break.  Treat yourself to something you truly enjoy.  You do not have to spend much money on yourself.  Buy a lipstick or your favorite nail polish.  Buy a new blouse or dress that you can wear on date nights, just do something for yourself.  You deserve it, mom!

9.  Don't sweat the small stuff.

There is this flowchart which I came across on Facebook.  It says, "Do you have a problem in life?"  If your answer is NO, it says, "WHY WORRY?"  If your answer is YES, "Can you do something about it?"  If your answer is either YES or NO, it both leads to "WHY WORRY?"  It clicked and really made sense.  Why worry?  Why stress yourself on something you can or cannot do something about?  What does it give you?  Wrinkles, anxiety, STRESS!   If you can do something about it, do it.  You don't need to panic and give yourself unnecessary stress when you can solve it.  If you can't, why can you just chill and let things happen?  It will pass eventually.  Just accept the consequences.  Life is too short to worry about anything.  Just enjoy the good and not-so-good moments.  Just stay positive and look at the good side of things.  Life doesn't have to be perfect in order to be happy.

10.  Always smile.


Always smile.

The first thing to do after getting out of bed in the morning?  Face the mirror and smile.  Smile like you won the lottery like you are the luckiest wife in the world.  Smile because of all the blessings you received and all the blessings that are coming your way.  There is always a reason to smile, find it.  Be grateful, thankful, and blessed for the life you have.  Smiling sets your mood for the entire day.  If you're in a good mood, things will always be positive.  When you smile, people will smile back at you.  Even if you don't feel like it, just smile, because a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear, plus it's free!
