UNIQUELY BATANGAS: ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES STORE

It was a lazy afternoon with the hubby at work and just me, mom, and our son at home.  We were bored so we decided to head to our nearest cafe/bakeshop to just chill and have merienda.  It was just a quick jeepney ride, about five minutes from our home, located at Bolbok, Batangas City near the entrance of Lourdes Village beside 7/11 and the Batangas Provincial Sports Complex.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES DAILY SCHEDULE

Ann's Home of Cakes and Pastries of Batangas is the Mer-Nel's of Laguna.  If you are true-blood Batangueno, you probably know Ann's.  You know that one bakeshop that does better than the big brands?  For every occasion at every Batangueno household, there is almost always Ann's cakes.  Ann's was born at this exact location selling their famous coconut macaroons.  I remember it was called Ann's House of Macaroons (please correct me if I'm wrong) before they became famous for their cakes.  Ann's Home of Cakes and Pastries is now doing so well that they are branching out, not only selling macaroons but also cakes and other pastries like cookies, brownies, and lengua de gato.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES LOGO

Large cake companies like Red Ribbon and Goldilocks here in Batangas better watch out as Batanguenos are starting to patronize our homegrown products.  People now prefer buying their cakes from Ann's during birthdays, special occasions like graduation or Mother's Day, and other celebrations.  Ann's Home of Cakes and Pastries is also now branching out and currently has four shops, one at their original location in Bolbok, Batangas, where all cakes are made (a.k.a. the main branch/flagship store) and one located at the city proper in P. Burgos Street, beside the Masonic Lodge just across Red Ribbon.  They also have one located at Kumintang Ilaya just a few steps across Pic n' Save, and their latest branch inside the mall at SM City Batangas.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES INTERIORS

For the main store, they are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 p.m. daily.  They are now also serving tea and coffee and have sitting areas for customers (just like a proper cafe) to enjoy their pastries in-store which I really appreciate as you can try their cakes.  They offer cake slices so customers can sample their cakes before buying a whole one.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES FIRST STORE

It is still fascinating and a bit nostalgic to think that they just started as a humble pastry shop selling exclusively macaroons with plywood walls and colorful dainty store just beside a then carwash shop, until they expanded and started to grow, now having their own building at the same location and continuing to branch out.  It was years before they really got famous.  Persistence and patience is really key to success, I guess, plus props for innovation, because have they not ventured into making cakes, they probably would not be as popular and as competitive as they are now.  It is nice to see that they still remember their roots and paid homage to their first store by framing this picture.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES STAFF

The place is very spacious for customers and the ambiance is inviting.  They have got adequate tables for guests to just lounge and drink coffee with their cakes.  The store is a perfect place for meeting and catching up with friends.  The pastries are very easily accessible for dine-in customers.  You can order from the cashier and they will get it for you or you can just get what you want and pay it on the register.  For whole cakes, you can request to have them decorated with your personal dedication.  All you have to do is to write it on a piece of paper (which they provide at the register) and they will do the lettering of your greetings or messages with no extra charge.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES CAKE FRIDGE

Cakes are made fresh every day and are displayed on big clear fridges where you can just pick what you like.  I love the fact that each item has its price tag and expiration date placed on it.  They have got the usual whole cakes and cake slices.  They also offer two kinds of loaf bread: banana and carrot.  One whole loaf of banana bread cost 125 pesos and you can try it out for 15 pesos per slice.  I personally love the carrot loaf which costs 215 pesos for a whole loaf of bread and just 27 pesos for one slice.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES CAKE FLAVORS

They also offer the usual pasalubong.  They have got oatmeal cookie crisps, butterscotch bites, brownies, revel bars, smores, lengua, and chocolate chip cookies to name a few.  They still got their original product, the macaroons.  There are lots of varieties to choose from.  They offer ones that are packed on plastic packs/pouches but they also got boxes and canisters, depending on the quantity.  The price point is from 40 pesos to approximately 100 pesos for plastic packs and 130 pesos to 750 pesos for those in cans or boxes.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES WHOLE CAKES

Almost all cake flavors are readily available when you visit their store.  Cakes are placed inside a red box with or without the dedication of your choice then tied with a white ribbon.  Cakes come with a free birthday candle if requested. My personal favorite, the banana walnut, and red velvet.  We had red velvet on our son's christening and it was a hit.  Banana walnut I give as gifts if a friend is having a birthday or if we are going to a fiesta or house blessing.  I have also tried their matcha and it was also good.  I have yet to try their triple chocolate mousse cake and strawberry (makes mental note).

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES CARROT CAKE

But of all of these wonderful flavors, there is a crowd favorite and it seems to be the carrot cake, so that is what we ordered when we visited the place.  The cake is so moist and fluffy with shredded bits of carrots, morsels of melted chocolate chips, and walnut.  The top is covered with cream cheese frosting with a generous grating of chocolate.  It was delicious!  Personally, I do not like chocolate-flavored cakes.  I find them too sweet for my liking.  I tend to lean towards other flavors and this one was really balanced, not too sweet, not too chocolatey.  It was perfect for my taste.  Even my mom and kiddo liked it too!

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES DESSERT

Oh, I forgot to mention, they also do customized cakes.  You just have to personally go to the store to check them out or you can call or message them on Facebook.  You have to check out their amazing assorted cake tower.  Their prices are pretty reasonable and very competitive with the other ones, plus their cake prices are truly a bang for your buck.

ANN'S HOME OF CAKES AND PASTRIES VISIT

Ann's Home of Cakes and Pastries is definitely worth paying a visit.  It is a no-brainer in terms of what to bring to an event (i.e. birthday celebration, graduation, fiesta, et cetera).  We surely had a pleasant experience at the place.  The staff is very, very friendly and accommodating.  I appreciate it that they gave me a price list when I asked for one, but I think it would be best to put up a menu of some sort so that guests can have easy access to the prices.  There is also room for improvement in terms of the drinks they offer and I do hope that they could come up with some baked pasta (ahem, lasagna) or something on their menu, but overall, we enjoyed our visit at Ann's and we are definitely coming back.
